Wes Johnson brings discipline, experience, and adaptability to his coaching approach. A Marine and former professional athlete, Wes understands what it takes to compete at the highest level and how to push athletes while meeting them where they are mentally. I can be a tough coach, but I’m intentional about reading each athlete and using the mentality that will get the best out of them.

With 23 years of volleyball coaching experience, Wes tailors his style to the age group he’s working with—focusing heavily on technical development for younger athletes while taking a more strategic approach with older players. My background as a professional athlete for 16 years allows me to teach the details and discipline required to compete at elite levels.

As a professional athlete, Wes finished second in the nation in 2017 before retiring. As a coach, he has qualified teams for Nationals nearly every year of his coaching career, including the past seven consecutive years in the Liberty and USA divisions. Guided by the philosophy, “Don’t practice until you get it right—practice until you can’t get it wrong,” Wes emphasizes repetition, precision, and preparation to help athletes perform under pressure.

Coaching Philosophy

Wes’s coaching philosophy centers on discipline, adaptability, and intentional athlete development. Drawing from his background as a Marine and former professional athlete, he emphasizes mental toughness while tailoring his approach to meet each athlete where they are. He prioritizes strong technical foundations for younger players and strategic, high-level execution for advanced athletes. Guided by the belief, “Don’t practice until you get it right—practice until you can’t get it wrong,” Wes focuses on repetition, precision, and preparation to build confident athletes who can consistently perform under pressure.
